You always here the tune before the rap and that is what you first recognise.
Once your brain has tuned into the track then the listening of the rap above it takes over.

And yes, does it need to be a chart topper to be recognised by people? I can quite easily listen to an acapella and I could choose that over a lot of songs that have beats.

I'd be liable to agree with Docker. Simple fact of the matter is that a previous hit will resonate better with others and make it more accessible.

That's true. Precisely why people re-release old songs and in some cases make them even better. Wouldn't say that was the case with the Daft Punk/West track though personally.

The thing that irks me is that many dismiss the genre on the grounds that it's devoid of any originality.

Depends. I often don't pay too much heed to rap music, but my ears certainly go up when I recognise something familiar. I got sucked into Late Registration because a few of the samples were songs I liked.
