tbf pretty much all of rap music samples other people's music as the underlying beat.
Some just use more of the track than others.

A lot of hip-hop does come from sampling, but I think making a beat from scratch is much more impressive and much harder.

OK it was a throwaway comment, but it is fair to say that when it comes to sampling that the rap industry is way ahead of most other genres.
Today this may not be the case (they've run out of songs to use...) but original rap was based on sampling.

Yes that's true- however you could also claim that the majority of mainstream contemporary music references its predecessors, albeit less directly than hip-hop.
Morto- I can program and play drums pretty well but that doesn't mean I have the vision or nous to produce a hit single like West does.
