Just sat and read the whole thing. I think homophobia isn't just confined to Football, and have read other versions of this in Basketball/NFl/Baseball too.

Le Saux has a point when he likens it to racism - if a player dropped the N bomb in a game as a slur intended to wind up another, there would be world war 3 and rightly so. Therefore, attacking a persons sexuality shouldn't be so far removed. Obviously in his case, Le Saux wasn't actually gay, but that still doesn't excuse the homophobia.
Racism is still a part of the game today, but it's just one of those things that has taken time to push out towards the fringes of acceptability. Hopefully homophobia is the next step.
