I've been playing for just over 11 years and would definitely recommend it to everyone. It's a great stress reliever and also really rewarding when you realise you can work out songs by ear rather than using books or internet tab.
For beginners, i'd recommend getting a book or sheet with chord diagrams, then buying the accompanying guitar book to your favourite album, or downloading the TAB. I prefer the books because they're really nice to keep and look cool on your bookshelf. Then just play and play and play, everyday.

I'm still having trouble getting my little finger into some chord shapes. Been playing for about a year now self taught.
Anyone got any exercises to get that darned little finger to behave itself?
| My little finger is double jointed or something, so when I try bend it and move it, it sort of 'clicks' into position. It's an absolute bastard trying to use it accurately on the frets. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Yeah I have the "clicky" little finger problem too.

ie. 7-9-9-9-7-7
| Bar the seventh fret all the way accross with your index finger, and then bar the 3 strings on the 9th fret with your ring finger but try to bend your ring finger so you dont mute the high e string.
It's much easier to get 2 fingers in position than trying to get 4 fingers into position

I play it like a standard power chord (1st, 3rd and 4th) and just let my little finger press down for the 4th string.
Weird eh.

| yes but if you're typing a chord on one line it's not the same as tab notation so you start with the lowest string

Meh. He got the gist.
Anyway, i agree that you don't need professional lessons at any age. Developing your own style is far more important than learning the "correct" way to play.
