see, I've heard of alternate and economy picking, but don't know which is which!
Will search UG, I get all my tabs from there as they're pretty good, and if a little off I can usually fill in the wrong notes with the right.

They are nearly the same, the names are a tad misleading. They should be called Alternate (Strict) and Alternate (Lazy/Economy) in my book. Basically Strict is following the up-down-up-down rhythm regardless of which note/string/whatever you are going to next, even if its a mammoth hop from the lowest string to the highest. Economy just means if you finish a line of notes on one string with a downstroke (say), and the next note you want to play is on a string lower than the current one, just extend the downstroke onto the next string to save time. In that case you would go ...up-down-up-down-*change string*- down-up-down.... instead of up-down-up-down-*change string*- up-down-up. Makes more sense to use economy (because you have to move your hand less) but in practise its a lot harder than that
Good call on the site, they explain stuff really well on there.

Anyone got any exercises to get that darned little finger to behave itself?
| My little finger is double jointed or something, so when I try bend it and move it, it sort of 'clicks' into position. It's an absolute bastard trying to use it accurately on the frets.

I started playing guitar when i was about 7, so i've been playing guitar for about 11 years now. I had lessons for three years when i was younger and i would say that you need to be professionally taught the basics at a young age.

I use ultimate-guitar frequently but am taught by a teacher.
Not been playing for long but the best way i find to practice with your pinky is by doing scales.
Plus a good but basic intro to use all of your fingers on is Sweet Child O' Mine.
