I learnt pretty much everything I know about playing the guitar from the net, and it was damn cheaper than a teacher. Plus there are a fair few guitarists on here if you need a hand with something.

| As he said. I get alot out from playing guitar, I'm by no means a good guitarist but I can play what I want which is usually punky or reggae which is fairly easy to pick up which is how I'm self taught.
I've been playing guitar for ten years now (that makes me feel sooo old!) and I don't know **** about music theory are reading it.
If your going to learn, just stick with it for the first few months and practice daily. Once I found I was progressing you get spurred on to stick with it then.
Nothing better than strumming the guitar for half hour after a ***** day at work!

Also tried to learn it via the internet, and must say i have a really slow learning curve, but if you keep behind it, you see some success after 2-3 weeks. Most difficult and frustrating thing in the beginning is, that you have to build some muscles you didnt use before to be able to play some chords.

I'm still having trouble getting my little finger into some chord shapes. Been playing for about a year now self taught.
Anyone got any exercises to get that darned little finger to behave itself?

Most of the time it's when you play chord shapes but then use the little finger for hammer ons and pull offs.
An example of a song would be Traffic by the stereophonics.

Well unfortunately a lot of the time the only way is to play it slow and repeatedly until you build the muscle memory in your little finger.
Had a quick look at the tab and I presume you mean in the C chord where you hammer from the first to the third fret and back again and so on for the others? If so it might be worth practising doing the 1h3p1 with your index and little finger on its own first, then when you get comfortable with doing that bring the chord shape into it with the other two fingers.

I've been self taught about 2 and a half years, anyone got any tips on improving my picking? It's really clumsy at times.
The problem with being self taught but being able to play things by ear is that I end up being able to play things but almost always in a more difficult way than needed.

Not sure how advanced you are, but practise doing simple exercises in alternate picking and economy picking, 3 notes per string. Really helps to get your brain into thinking about picking properly. Then apply it to some of your favourite licks/riffs. If you practise it enough it becomes second nature when learning new licks, and you learn them a lot faster.
Ultimate-Guitar.com had tons of picking tutorials and articles last time I looked (admittedly it was a long time ago). Just read up on how to do it, practise some of the simple exercises so you know how it feels, then pick a riff and slow it right down and make sure you can play it correctly.
If you are just playing simple riffs, sometimes its worth just slowing down a riff anyway if you a hitting lots of dead notes, and working the speed back up once you have got it nailed down. It makes it much easier to see where you are going wrong as well.
