Finchley Road is good tube wise, but residential parking is free after 6.30pm. If you park before, you'll be risking a ticket from the over zealous parking inspectors. Also, there aren't so many tube stops along the way. There's an NPC car park in St Johns Wood right by the tube station, just off Finchley Road and that'll give you Jubilee all the way to Wembley. Further out, Willesden Green, Kilburn etc offer better on street parking. Anywhere past West Hampstead will give you better options for on street parking.
If you're driving, I'd probably try and get as near to the stadium as possible and walk it. The main reason is, getting out of Wembley is an absolute nightmare using public transport. We were there on Saturday and left 5 minutes before the end. If you leave after that, the police stop you at various intervals down Wembley way to ensure that the tube/railway station doesn't overcrowd. Fair enough, only it can take an hour to get out as far as the tube station!
So, the £15 charge for car parking within walking distance suddenly doesn't seem so bad to me.
Have fun though, it's well worth the transport fun to get there. The game against Israel was awesome and the stadium is amazing. We sat right at the back and it was such a good view. You will not be disappointed.
