I think they have a friendly lined up though, not sure if that's going ahead. Porterfield was due to be back in the UK for some kind of check up and his assistant was going to be in charge for this game anyway, apparently.

Was surprised to hear this, i knew about the cancer but didnt know there was a possibility he would die so soon.

Armenia had a few decent results, got a draw with Portugal in the group, seems very popular over there

There seems to be one every week already so why not for someone like Porterfield ?

Maybe just Chelsea ? Wouldnt be surprised to see one at all grounds, well known in English football of course

We've known he's been ill for quite a while, so it's come as no great suprise - but on local radio recently there was a story about him from a friend from the Sunderland FA Cup winning side in 1973.

Apparently Porterfield was hospitalised a few weeks back having treatment and Armenia were due to play Portugal. He was told that travelling could put his life in danger, but probably realising he didn't have long left he flew out to organise the team and they got a 1-1 draw.

After just reading another piece on him I came accross this:

"The stadium was packed to see all the Portuguese stars like Ronaldo, Deco and the rest, but when Ian walked out, they all stood up and shouted his name. It was very moving."
