If you do go down the hotel route, look up the 'H' chain, who have 2-3 in the city. We stayed at one by the Olympic Village area. Two minutes to the beach (which is worth a walk along), twenty minutes to the city centre walking (very scenic), excellent hotel facilities. And very affordable.

What is the night life like and stuff, neither of us are huge sightseers, although im sure we'll obviously do alot, Places like Paris were just awesome to aimlessly mill around in, i imagine this is very much the same? How safe is it, etc, etc ,etc

ah, I missed that. yeah, some of them are 30 or over only and some won't let you have kids. most of them don't have any restrictions though.

do a search for the days you want to stay and pick a neighborhood. that's in the gotic part of town - the area between the ramblas and via laietana, basically my favorite. the area on the other side of the ramblas, el raval, is cheaper but not as nice. barceloneta puts you down in the docks area where you're close to the beach and great seafood. lots of options.

cheers mate, checking out alot of hotels, and it all seems very cheap, although Ive never really booked a holiday before, so ive no idea what is a decent price, but even like the ridiculous looking 5 star hotels are like £550 for 4 nights, seems pretty wise really. no real need for an absolutely amazing 5 star deal, id just feel a bit out of place, but some of these 4 star deals seem pretty nonchalant
