I thought we were related to them, not actually descended from them? Our ancestral species branched off, and we resulted from one branch, and the Great Apes the other.

I'd prefer to give to Monkey World than the WWF, and once I have some spare cash I may actually do so
| Star man!
I only knew about Monkey World because of my girlfriend - and to start with I was a bit "meh" about it. But I have to admit, once I went there a couple of times and realised how much they do for primate conservation (and the fact that Jim Cronin was an awesome individual) I was more than happy to contribute.

| yeah exactly. They stayed in the trees and we ventured to the plains. Anyway, how are we supposed to help them survive? Im sure people dont chop forsets down for fun.

Good on you.
A tenner a month means nothing over here but does wonders in countries where it is needed.
Tbh this board needs more like you.

They are being killed in huge numbers, and not just because of forest destruction. They're being killed by humans, whether to take the babies as part of the illegal animal trade (and they will kill the entire group to take the young)... or as "bush meat".
Organisations such as Monkey World assist governments of countries where these primates are found in helping with conservation (which can be about educating as well as trying to stop poaching).

| And it is very good that they're doing that.
But these sort of schemes are few and far between and are normally only for those animals who are cute and cuddly or have some sort of symbolism.
The WWF caters for all animals across the board and, imo, is a better option as it doesn't distinguish on the basis of what may pander (no pun intended) to the general public.

| You could have at least bothered to find out about Monkey World before you spouted what amounts to complete nonsense about it.
Jim and Alison Cronin are primate experts - she's an expert in primate psychology for example. They began the park as a sanctuary for primates who had been sold on the illegal pet trade market. The park isn't an attraction in the same sense that a zoo is - it merely helps them subsidise their work and raises people's understanding of primate conservation. Everything is geared towards the welfare of the primates - the visitors are a secondary concern.
The Cronins were hardly ever at the park because they were spending their whole lives lobbying governments, following up reports of concern, working with politicians, raising awareness of primate welfare.
Don't make ill-advised comments about their motivation or reasons. It makes you look foolish.
