SSN delivers 10% of Sky's viewing.
So it is regarded as one of their Golden Geese (alongside Sp1 and Sky 1,2 &3).
By putting it on Freeview it is both a deliverer of a load of viewers, but is also an advert to draw in those viewers who don't have Sky Sports.

Is it still being taken off Freeview, or did they change their minds on that one?
Not that I know of.
There's talk about their own "freeview" service but that has yet to see the light of day in any major way (it may well be being tested as we speak).
If it does get launched then one would assume that they would pull off the standard freeview for their output instead.
Understand there has been talk about Virgin Media setting up their own sports news service in conjunction with Setanta but that has quietened down recently...
It may have been that Sky would have been obliged to make SSN available to Virgin if they kept it on Freeview.
I think part of the issue is that Sky aren't refusing Virgin's right to broadcast their channels... I don't think they can do that - they have simply set the fee payable by Virgin at a prohibitive rate. It's possible they have been forced to keep it on Freeview as part of the legal battles.
I heard my both wonderful companies being talked about (freeview and setanta)
Yes xbilly is right, there is talks going on about lauching a setanta/freeview sports thing to rival them, but since sky still havent taken SSN off freeview, it hasnt been talked since.
As far as freeview know, there is no date between now and xmas to be taken off the air. I doubt i will actually.
Virgin are putting their eggs into the Virgin 1 vs Sky 1 battle that is set to loom.
So I would presume that the Virgin/ Setanta news thing will die down until they can gauge the success of Virgin 1.
tbf I'm behind Virgin on this.
Sky have had their cake for a long time now and someone with a bit of balls has come along (NTL had no idea or direction) and now they're quietly worried about what's going to happen next. By taking Sky 1 and SSN off Virgin was just a petulant spoilt kid reaction.
Couple this with Virgin's much better BB and telephone service and you can see a large amount of Sky's market share being eroded away.

To be fair - just over £1 a day is pretty superb value when you consider the range of entertainment available.
