OK, a blatant spin-off thread, but it occurs to me that almost all my DVD box sets are American: Buffy, Angel, Deadwood, Sopranos, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Firefly. The only British one I've bought recently is Life on Mars S1, which was decent but not great. So, I'm looking for British shows that compare well to that American line-up. In particular, shows that

a) are dramas wtih comic moments, or are comedy-drama,
b) have well-written dialogue
c) have more than a couple of good roles

Any suggestions?

A more difficult request, until someone has the guts to fund a 24 part series British drama is always going to be playing catch up imo

I soooo want to say Cadfael... but modern audiences probably couldn't take the poorly dubbed Hungarian stand-ins. It's like a spaghetti western with West Country accents at times.

We don't spend the cash the US networks do, so comparable series are hard to come by.

If you like Scrubs, Green Wing is very funny ( I know it's not a drama, but still )
