A more difficult request, until someone has the guts to fund a 24 part series British drama is always going to be playing catch up imo |
pardon the cliche but british drama needs guts to produce greater quality, not greater quantity. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Yea I agree in part but I think one thing would lead to the other, if there was more time to develop character, storyline etc then more daring tv would be being made but then again if people were being more daring with what is available then perhaps there would be more inclinaton to fund more ambitious projects </BLOCKQUOTE>
but that's not true. 24 episodes means a billion writers which all too often means embarassing character development. there's just not enough demand for quality to justify the costs - why pay for a one camera comedy that takes half a year to produce a series of six when you can make those six episodes in one day in a studio (and make some money off texts to boot)? the majority of decent british shows from the past few years that i can think of have had very low budgets.
american shows have a far bigger potential audience - domestically and overseas - and so they can spend money on the kinds of things british shows can't. if something like the office even had a modest budget it would never have been made.
