maxtor are crap eitherway, onyl come with 1 year warranties, not a good thing for a hard drive,
seagate or western digital are much better

are there any good ones out there though (and by good I mean cheap), that are powered through the USB drive, rather than having an external AC plug adaptor?

Unsure on that question but most external stuff I preffer to have its own power source.
