Ok read it now. I dont think I'd pay the amounts quoted in that article though for coffee, I'm not that into it.

the gist of the article is that basically higher end coffee growers are moving away from bulk, mixed shipments and transitioning towards single-farm beans, similar to wine and chocolate.

these moves are earning some farmers far more than what they earned even from fair trade certification. another upshot is that this money goes primarily to third world countries and goes directly to the farmers rather than filtered through inefficient governments.

the aforementioned las golondrinas bean currently sells for $80/lb.

That's not coffee, ffs.

Snob, my arse. But Nescafe ? There are much better instant brews around than that stuff.

Although, having said that, the first time I went to Malta, the Nescafe available was not of the granule or powder variety. Rather, it looked more like ground coffee, and tasted like it too. There were no grounds left in the cup after drinkage, though. T'was gorgeous stuff.

Now, however, the poor Malts are stuck with the same garbage we get. Haven't had a decent coffee over there in years.

I can buy coffee that's better than 99% of the rest of the coffee in the world for about $15 or $16/lb. since I go through about 1/2 lb per week (and beans start to lose their flavor after a week), I typically buy 1/2 lb at a time. so a little more than a dollar a day for just about the best coffee ever. the current $/EU exchange makes it even cheaper for you.
