When I was in SA I was called up to the army but I was too young to watch Total Recall.

| While it may or may not be a correct point of view, it's not made a stupid point because of your analogy, as it's incorrect.
The acts in 'regular' porn are not rape, whereas the acts in the more severe types of child porn that Langham downloaded are child abuse. You'd have to look if there was a correlation between people looking at rape porn and then going on to commit acts of rape to make that link. I've got a vague recollection that there actually is, but as i say it's a vague memory, so i could be completely wrong on that. Either way, what happens with people looking at consensual acts in 'regular' porn is neither here nor there as an indicator.

Even if there is a correlation I don't believe watching rape scenes causes the act to be committed. Just that rapists like watching rape which is kind pretty obvious.

| It's never as clear as cause and effect, as there must be some desire of that kind in the first place. That doesn't mean that prolonged viewing of such images doesn't re-inforce and stimulate such desires, though, or make them appear more commonplace and therefore easier to rationalise.
I'm not saying that it does do that, incidentally, just that it's not clear cut. And certainly not an "idiotic" premise, as peacemaker stated.

I agree and wouldn't say it was idiotic to speculate that this may be the case in certain scenarios. Even in the cases where there is cause and effect I'd say it's irrelevant in the greater scheme and would say the same in the cases if child porn. The relevance I can see is whether the demand creates the supply.

I think it's a very difficult thing to assess and all you can say with any certainty is that it doesn't necessarily cause the act to be committed.
There are far too many variables involved. A man may simply have a curiosity, another may have a craving. If someone does have a craving then you have to wonder how long porn will satisfy that craving... and when it no longer does, they may either lose interest in the act, or they may try and seek out a way to intensify their craving.
If someone has a curiosity I guess it's feasible that satisfying it to some extent using porn may then lead to looking for more... whereas not ever looking at it may cause a loss of interest (you could probably reverse that too!).
Anyway, so many variables. I don't think there's a definite link and I don't think there is no link.

I personally think the two are normally mutually exclusive and in cases where they aren't then it's irrelevant.

But if child porn didn't exist, would that man's craving just go away or would he rather seek out to satisfy that craving in a more real way?
And imo it is a rather stupid pov to suggest that someone looking at child porn itself is likely to go on and commit an actual sexual crime against a real child, whereas someone looking at adult porn does not have the same potential to commit the exact crimes on a fellow adult.

That was the "you could probably reverse that too" part of my post.
As for the second paragraph... if I look at porn then I look at normal porn, and I do have normal sex too.

| What Retro said. You're making a leap in linking consensual sex with rape.
