Wouldn't do any harm to tell them, but if you don't pay by direct debit i doubt you need to.

my insurance with admiral send me a letter a few weeks before my insurance has finished. they tell me how much another year will cost me and if i say nothign then they'll automatically debit it from my account.

In theory , no.
The Post Office has a tick box where you can auto-renew if you like, but most will just say that you are about to expire.
Don't know about DD as I never use it .
