the whole estate area around st marys, where the train line goes past, is particularly delightful.

Winchside is awesome.
Part of that is because my mate is responsible for the running of the city centre, and for keeping pikey twats out of sight.
And Porthouse > any club in Southampton, for some reason.

Oh, one other thing - moving from Bristol, you'll be impressed with the change in traffic. A friend of mine moved down from Bristol and was pleasantly surprised by the traffic jams, or lack thereof, on the way to work.
There, that's a plus. At last!

Winchester tbh.
Nights out in the Porthouse and then walking the three miles home afterwards \o/
Gandhi's and that Nepalese place \o/
The farmer's market \o/
Shame it's so full of unfriendly southern twats and so much of my family or I'd spend more time there..

Thanks for all your posts guys, much appreciated.
I am currently leaning towards staying in Bristol and commuting each day, which would mean 1.5+ hrs drive each way but at least I'd avoid the crapness of Andover. Does anyone drive these sorts of distances to work? Will it knacker me out too badly?
I would of course consider moving into one of the surrounding towns e.g. Winchester/Basingstoke, but I'm having real trouble finding somewhere decent but affordable for 1 person. Anyone got any ideas?
