sounds very strange behaviour from the doctor, first of all he is in no position to offer a diagnosis as far as i can see?, also if he did suspect something its odd not to arrange something a bit quicker. Is the doctor aware that he is responding to his voices (as in carrying out the actions they tell him to? this is quite important)
Lots of people hear voices, it dosnt on its own mean scizophenia, it could be a number of other things, which is why it seems strange that the doctor would say that. Though even a lot of doctors can be ignorent to mental illness.
Its very hard to offer advice as it can be a very wide ranging illness, and seems far from being a proper diagnosis so far. Are there any other syptoms, dellusional belifes? confusion, or disorginisation in his thinking?
you could do worse than look at the wiki page. Offers some simple explanations of the main aspects of it, i'll answer any questions i can, had some experince with friends ect, and have worked in mental health for the last 5 years, currently a student nurse in mental health. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia |

My Grandad, just before he passed away, had a mild case brought on by bleeding on the brain. He thought all the nurses were vampires hell bent on killing him. Plus he had to be watched when he was released from hospital as every hour or so, he'd call the Police saying the vampires were throwing stones at his window.
It was a frightening experience. After he recovered from his brain 'injury', he was being pumped to the eyeballs on drugs to help him get over his mental illness. That was right up until he died.

Guy I knew years ago was diagnosed with it and although I didn't see anything at all of him for ages I saw him recently and he seemed very well considering, think he was on all sorts of medication so it seems like it can be dealt with to an extent. Thats about all of my really limited experience though.
Hope it all works out alright mate

My ex had it. She saw her best mate (who had killed herself jumping off Beachy Head a year or so earlier) all the time, apparently in a decomposing state. It was quite hard, hearing her quietly saying things like "Do you want anything Jay?" when we were out shopping.
It wasn't always there in the speech sense, but she often used to drift off, being very quiet (which she would describe if challenged/asked if she was Ok as "Sorry, miles away")
I found it very, very hard to try to help (although I tried, and almost wrecked my life in the process) - keeping the sufferer's mind occupied is the only thing that, outwardly, appeared to help. Weather it did or not, only she would know.

Schizophrenia can be treated fairly easy. I have a client at the moment that has been diagnosed as a Paranoid Schizophrenic since 21 (she is 37). Although she has had a few lapses in her life the illness has been contained by medication. The one positive thing is that your dad is recieving the help he needs. Also remember, he hasnt actually been diagnosed with this yet.
