| Also aside from Callaghan, Stanley Matthews and probably a few others missed 7 years of official internationals due to the second world war.

Madness. Heskey. He'll play as well. It will be Andy Cole next.
Better than Johnson starting I suppose.
| So it's not madness then? If it's better than one of the next forwards along the line? </BLOCKQUOTE>
Well, Johnson starting would be MENTAL. In capital letters, so worse than mere 'madness'.

Good answer. Heskey's fine though, if only as a reminder to some people that we just have a good national side, not an amazing 'OMG why aren't we winning world cups?' one.

We're not absolutely certain about this, but Paul Fields and Geoff Clay both reckon the answer is Ian Callaghan, the man who played more games for Liverpool - 843 - than anyone else. Callaghan played two group games during the 1966 World Cup, but was not recalled until 1977, when Ron Greenwood was in the middle of what Paul Fields calls "his short-lived experiment of picking every English-born Liverpool player bar David Fairclough and the criminally ignored Jimmy Case".
| So Heskey has some way to go yet. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Ian Walker's up there too... 7 and a bit years between Feb 1997 and Jun 2004 |

There aren't really any great national teams anymore.
Haven't seen an interesting international match for years.
Both the World Cup and Euro Champs were severly underwhelming.

| How many other countries in the world can bring a player of his (occasional) ability into the squad as cover when they have about 4 players out suspended/injured?

The other 'good' sides DP?
Not that it's relevant, as I was more using it as a downer for those that think we have great players in abundance in every area (they exist, believe me) as apose to suggesting having Heskey as a reserve makes us weak.

I don't see what the big fuss is tbh, he's never been an out and out goalscorer fair enough, but he's great at holding up the ball and he's in form so why not? Ashton isn't fully fit, and Bent/Defoe/Johnson just haven't looked good enough.
Welcome back in my eyes
