400 million NBA products were sold in 20,000 retail locations in China in 2006 and are expected to increase by 50% this year.
83% of Chinese between the age of 15-24 say they are NBA fans, 51 TV stations in China broadcast the NBA, and 300 million Chinese are estimated to play basketball on a regular basis.
I personally don't care for the sport, but something tells me that given the Chinese support for the sport - it's probably #2
How much if Yao Ming wasn't there? </BLOCKQUOTE>
Probably plenty, he's only got the 6th most popular jersey in China behind Bryant, AI, T-Mac, Wade and Lebron. </BLOCKQUOTE>
And why do you think the chinese who know Bryant, iverson etc etc are apart from Ming...STFU, the chinese know about ball because of ming, hence him being the most voted all star each year.
Moopet. </BLOCKQUOTE>
NBA has always been popular in China long before Ming, idiot

Why england hasn't got a good basketball team? Post #183
Basketball is one of those sports that are fun to play but boring to watch IMO.
It's also certainly one of the bigger sports worldwide, even if it may not be #2. It's also a matter of whether you count simply participants or if you also take into account the # of countries where it's played, because any sport that's big in China but tiny elsewhere will be one of the most popular in the world. That factor (But replace China with India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) is what gives Cricket big numbers, but it's hardly played at all outside the UK and it's former colonies. And yes, I know there are teams in many countries, but it's still tiny. There are floorball players in the UK, but some of you probably don't even know what sport I'm talking about.
Got away from the point there for a bit, but my point was pretty much that basketball is a sport that enjoys popularity on many different continents, and the only team sport that's clearly bigger is football, even if others might be bigger as well it's not by a huge margin.

Why england hasn't got a good basketball team? Post #184
Don't know about 2nd most reputable, but it's easily the second most popular professional sport. It's massive in Europe and the Americas, and as a participant sport in most of Asia. Isn't it played a bit in Australia?
England's ****, or mediocre at best, at sports they're obsessed with and noone else plays, let alone a sport with actual competition.

There's no competitive infrastructure in this country of any real note. Particularly in terms of child teams who have to organise games and competitions themselves (I know this is a massive problem locally).
