400 million NBA products were sold in 20,000 retail locations in China in 2006 and are expected to increase by 50% this year.
83% of Chinese between the age of 15-24 say they are NBA fans, 51 TV stations in China broadcast the NBA, and 300 million Chinese are estimated to play basketball on a regular basis.
I personally don't care for the sport, but something tells me that given the Chinese support for the sport - it's probably #2

the first rules for football were written down by British soldiers whilst abroad too, in Belgium I think.
Basketball is played a lot in schools, we played it a lot more than cricket, and we never played rugby. But whenever nets got put up in parks they'd get burnt down, unfortunately you can't use jumpers for goalposts in basketball. As a participation sport it's pretty widely played by kids. But as a spectator sport nobody cares about it, due to many reasons I guess, not having enough decent domestic players, just 2nd rate foreigners, no tv coverage etc. I went to a Manchester Giants game once, was pretty fun, but you don't grow up supporting a basketball team like you do a football team. The Giants went bust and now we have Manchester Magic, I have no idea how good they are.
Isn't Olowakundi still playing? can't he technically play for us as he lived here for quite a while? and we can always bring Amaechi out of retirement.
One last thing, I don't think it's true but last week I heard Water Polo is the second most spectated team sport in the world. Make of that what you will.

The genius of the British lends itself not so much to the winning of games as to their invention. An astonishing number of international games were invented by the British, who, whenever they are surpassed by other nations, coolly invent another one which they can dominate for a while by being the only ones to know the rules...

Probably plenty, he's only got the 6th most popular jersey in China behind Bryant, AI, T-Mac, Wade and Lebron.

***disclaimer, im drunk after 10 bottles of wkd blue and 10 of smirnoff ice***
I guess i can speak for local level, basketball since ive played for about 16 years and been a qualified referee for about 14 years, btw im qualified to referee national league games which is just below international level.
Local level basketball is **** poor, especiually in my area(teesside)
Money is only pumped into national league teams and local teams struggle to survive, we dont recieve any funding and rely on player registration fee's and weekly match fee's and sponsorships to survive (my club sponsor my team to the tune of £300 p/y)
Local level sides are run on the same level a basic sunday league football sides, pay to play and pay to register.
TBF no one is intrested in the sport unless they come through some sort of junior club or school team. In thew last 16 years we have had less then 10 players come through local schools and 2 playrs through local level clubs.
Its an american sports and people will always think such, it wont ever take off unless it gets some major coverage and that wont happen whilst we let our best national talent move abroad, or totally ignore it.
Anyway drunken rant over apart from sayoing its a better team game than football |

And why do you think the chinese who know Bryant, iverson etc etc are apart from Ming...STFU, the chinese know about ball because of ming, hence him being the most voted all star each year.
Moopet.

Lacrosse is pretty small in England although we aren't that bad at it (probably 5th best nation in the world). Most of its centered around a large lacrosse community in Manchester. However its spreading through unis like wildfire with several new uni/southern teams starting each year.
| you can only really play it if you are middle class in this country tbh.

same is true for cricket, rugby, tennis, golf etc, maybe less so now than in the past, but it's still a pretty big element of it.
