Bolan was killed on this day in 1977. I don't expect many people are going to take a lot of notice, though they're doing something for him on R6, and there was an interesting documentary on BBC4 on Friday evening.
Like John Peel, I'm a big T.Rex fan - I once blew a term's grant on a signed T Rex LP, plus copies of the first four LPs on Regal Zonophone - and think that he made just wonderfully arrogant pop/rock records, as well as some more bonkers ones when the group was still Tyrannosaurus Rex. Anyone who calls an album My People Were Fair And Had The Sky In Their Hair But Now They're Content To Wear The Stars On Their Brows can't be all there.
Big influence today still - you hear a lot of bands aping the T Rex sound. If you haven't listened, go and buy, borrow or download Electric Warrior and see what I mean. Great album.

John Peel f**king LOVED Bolan. As do I.
Despite the fact that they were hugely popular, I think T-Rex's influence is massively under-rated today. So many bands in so many genres owe so much to him.

I recently made a little collage of all my favourite musicians to put in my wallet (because no-one I actually know is worth going in my wallet).
Bolan made the cut.
Quite possibly one of the saddest things ive ever heard.

whs
Peel was the only DJ who played the early Tyranosaurus Rex stuff on the radio.
All others making absurd comments about an unpronouncable name and/or Bolan sounding like a chipmunk.
