e-sata is the way to go if you want a speedy external HDD (ie identical to an internal drive rather than USB speeds).
You can pick up drives and enclosures cheaply these days and many are dual interface (e-sata/usb). You'd need an e-sata connection too (on newer mobos or a ~£30 PCI card).
It looks liek for e-sata you don't need a PCI card if you've got a spare internal sata connector going spare. Just get an interntal to external converter for about £3, then £15+ for the external drive caddy and get whatever sata drive you want.
You could get a very fast 400GB external drive for around £60
