That's an awful team btw. Masses of individual talent but if that lined up on a pitch it would be a mess. </BLOCKQUOTE>

No it's not. You can't take it at face value. Rooney was the main reason why we nearly got relegated in 2004. If he had stayed, we probably would've been relegated the following season, nevermind come anywhere close to the CL place. </BLOCKQUOTE>

it's not about if he'd stayed though is it? entirely understand that, but the exercise is just constructing the best possible XI from players still playing who've played for your club at some point. don't see how Rooney can't be in that really. </BLOCKQUOTE>

If you take it just at playing ability, maybe. But, the Rooney who played for Everton was selfish and arrogant, demanding the whole team revolved around him - this same attitude meant that he could not fulfill his undoubted potential and carry the team as well as he could have (by being centre of attention.) He was a different player then as in he played as a proper striker playing on the last man and going on rampaging runs that absolutely devestated teams...he appears now to have mutated into a deep lying creative forward allowed to indulge himself and drift (although your lack of strikers may see SAF shoe-horn him back into his old self.) Rooney had no respect for either the manager or assistant manager which had an obvious detrimental effect on the pitch, and formed a clique in the dressing room which further impacted upon team morale. If he stayed or if he returned, this would remain the same as the same culprits and victims are still mostly around the club.

Moyes or Rooney? I would choose Moyes every time. And that's the choice Kenwright made also .

revisionist history ftw \o/

you make it sound like everton made a conscientious decision to offload rooney and couldn't WAIT for the first buyer to come along.

I'll have a very rough go at a best available Stevenage side

Alan Julian (Boro)

Barry Fuller (Boro)
Efe Sodje(Gillingham)
Sam Sodje (Charlton on loan)
John Nutter (Boro)

George Boyd (Peterborough)
Adam Miller (Boro)
Mitchell Cole (Boro)

Antony Elding (Stockport)
Barry Hayles (Plymouth)
DJ Campbell (Leicester)

Not brilliant, but a decent defence, a tricky winger and pace and experience up front
