To be honest the instructions that came with my router were utterly pathetic and I only got it secured by completely ignoring them. Same when I sorted my dad's out last week.

WEP not exactly much of a hurdle. A quick google on certain keywords will show you a video that demostrates how easy it is to hack. Even WPA can be hacked with a bit more effort relatively easily.

I have my router unsecured but manage it so people I don't know only get http access. tbh hardly anyone has used it either.

i set mine up to be unsecured, but only the only MAC addresses it allows to connect are mine, my mum's and my sister's.

i reckon i could get it to log the MAC addresses of any thieving arsehole that tried to connect and then wirelessly cause rape to happen to them. something for the weekend i guess.

My wireless is unsecured as when I tried to secure it, I loss access to the network...

I'm sure if anyone did try to use my broadband, they'd soon stop after realising the continuing appalling speeds I get...

Yep, because I can't see any benefit to being able to have my laptop connected to the internet anywhere in the house without cabling.

Useless gimmick. </BLOCKQUOTE>

He's right to an extent tbf to him. However, he's a bit of a muppet to completely condem all wireless.

I know people who have a wirless router sitting almost right next to their desktop PC and have it set up for wirless. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Still more convenient than using a wire though.

It's not the new iPod, because a wireless modem/router can be bought dirt cheap, and all new laptops have wireless built in. It's just becoming the standard, whereas an iPod is an expensive fashion accessory.

People buy it because it looks good, as well as the fact it plays music.

And there's better, less fashionable, players available for less.

I have a wireless router sitting next to my desktop PC, though it is connected by ethernet instead (which stops my wireless card crashing the PC amongst other things). The laptop and my fiancée's iMac connect wirelessly. That way I get all the cancer. \o/
