There was civilisation on the site of Rhodes Town during the Hellenic period, and the Romans also occupied it. There's a museum in the Old Town which covers it's history.
There's also the Acropolis of Rhodes, with a reconstructed chariot stadium. You can take a day trip to Lindos, and see the Acropolis there and also the castle.
If all you want is to see ancient historical sites then I suspect there are better places in Greece than Rhodes.

I know all that. That's why I want to see it. Was thinking Lindos as it's apparently warmer than the rest of the island which in oct/nov might be getting a tad chilly.
And I have a mate who'll lend me a yacht on Rhodes so if it bores me I'll go check out the other islands.
