There was civilisation on the site of Rhodes Town during the Hellenic period, and the Romans also occupied it. There's a museum in the Old Town which covers it's history.

There's also the Acropolis of Rhodes, with a reconstructed chariot stadium. You can take a day trip to Lindos, and see the Acropolis there and also the castle.

If all you want is to see ancient historical sites then I suspect there are better places in Greece than Rhodes.

I know all that. That's why I want to see it. Was thinking Lindos as it's apparently warmer than the rest of the island which in oct/nov might be getting a tad chilly.

And I have a mate who'll lend me a yacht on Rhodes so if it bores me I'll go check out the other islands.

Lindos is definitely hotter. Rhodes Town can be quite windy - especially on the Western side.

Whatever... the fact that Rhodes Town is still not a major target for Brits suits me down to the ground. :cool:

Not if you don't want to see any Medieval poofy stuff as well.

If all you're spending 100% of your day time visiting historical sites then I doubt it'll have enough. But then I can't think of a greek island that would.

There are a few other islands in close-ish proximity for you to reach by yacht, and Turkey is very close by (Marmaris).

It'll be quiet in October I'd have thought. I've been as late as mid-September and it was still fairly busy then, but I suspect it'll tail off sharply at the end of September. Not sure when somewhere lik Lindos will start to 'close down' for the winter.

Rhodes Town is a working town as well as a tourist place - so the new town at least will have plenty of places to eat and drink.
