If you had the view it was negative and one-sided I would suggest this was rather due to the fact the Scientologists didn't take the chances to address the questions of whether they were a cult instead of Panorama's treatment. Instead they tried to discredit or intimidate anyone who took an opposing view to them which made them look more clownshoes.

Example of when that really worked? Religions/cults/blind following of whatever has always lead to bad for those who are the followers. The leaders, somehow, always seem to fare well.
