Pretty much detest ska as a genre /o\
| So you say
I really can't stand RBF type ska anymore either. You listened to UK bands such as Lightyear, Random Hand and The Filaments? Big D and the Kids Table are my favorite US skapunk band. All fairly different from the RBF/LTJ type stuff.

No I haven't. Haven't really given them a chance. Where should I start? Guess this should go in the 'punk' thread that isn't much further down the page |

Probably should do but nm.
Well, Random Hand I've only seen live, don't own anything so I can't say, they're heavy ska though, hardcore elements to their music...
Lightyear you can really start anywhere, tis all ace. 2nd album better than their 1st IMO though.
Big D - How It Goes or Good Luck albums, anything off them. For individual tracks try LAX, Fatman, Evil Girl Angry Girl or 5 Kids Down

Toxicity got me into metal/heavier stuff all those years ago.
Hybrid Theory before that got me into metal too, but I never got sucked in too deep to, say, rubbish punk crap like Sum 41 and Blink 182, and teenage heartbreak bands like Korn and Staind.
Being brought up on Beatles cassettes has made me appreciate all sorts of music though.

Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth got me seeking out more of the alternative American scene, leading to finding out about many awesome bands who now make up large chunks of my CD collection.
When No One Is Watching, We Are Invisible by Jori Hulkonnen got me to re-appreciate Electronic music again after I had gone off it for a while.

Don't listen to much, if any of the genre now, but 2001 by Dr. Dre made me appreciate hip-hop in a way I hadn't been able to before and kept me interested until the airwaves became awash with the high levels of rubbish that seem to be eminating from this genre at present.

| There's a band that you could both check out (if you don't know them already) called Link 80.
American band around the mid 90's they were a fusion of Ska and Hardcore (or skacore as it was labeled at the time).
If you can find any of their stuff, go for the album "17 Reasons" its the only album they did with the original singer. Who was a guy called Nick Traina (random bit of trivia: he was the son of the writer Danielle Steel) who committed suicide.
They toured with Capdown once and one of the guitarists joined RX Bandits afterwards. Just found a myspace page |

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd got me into prog rock bands such as Yes and The Moody Blues
Chronicle - Creedence Clearwater Revival got me into early 70's rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Deep Purple
Parklife - Blur got me into the whole 90's Brit Pop thing which led me into getting into bands like Blur, Oasis, The Verve, The Charlatans, The Stone Roses et al.

| 17 Reasons is one of those albums where you listen and don't really take it in as it's so short.
I don't really like the tongue in cheek type of ska, like RBF. So I loved Link 80 instantly.
Pretty sure there's a Misfits cover on there as well.
