Us v the mackems has been extremely fierce in the past, if not in recent years. My old man was a regular at Tyne/Wear derbies during the 60's and saw some pretty horrendous incidents between rival fans - such as coins and bottles being thrown at small children who happened to be at the game. There was also a fairly well known incident during the late 90's, where a group of our hooligan's, The Gremlins, took on the Sunderland Seaburn Casuals at North Shields ferry. When the police got there, it was apparently like something out of the old wild west - blood and broken bodies lying everywhere. Rivalry is one thing, but when people lay into each other it's something else. :thdn:
