Me and Mrs Mook are exiting the world of renters and for the first time in out lives actually own. We closed on Thursday on a lovely apartment in the Washington Heights section of NYC which is the last "relatively" affordable neighborhood. We are thrilled that we were able to buy something on our own in Manhattan without any assistance after only being married for 4 years. Now just need to pack, move and figure out a way to keep the cat from puking on all the new furniture we're going to need to buy. Needless to say, we're quite happy.
Doesn't matter to us. We're not looking to make a quick profit and in the end if prices tank in Manhattan, when we do look to possibly sell 5-10 years down the road we'll still make money. We were looking for a year and when you find a place you like you take it and don't worry about timing the market. Got a good price due to my stellar negotiating abilities

Out of interest, if you don't mind indicating, what sort of price region is a "lovely apartment in an affordable neighbourhood"?
About 400k....remember it's all relative People who know the NYC market said we did well.
I had a job interview for a marketing role in a London Estate agents a while back, couldn't believe the price of central London flats, 1-beds going for 600k in places. I think that sounds fairly good to be honest for Manhattan.
I always wondered how in Friends they managed to afford the flats they supposedly lived in
