I love musicals. However, I prefer those where the songs actually propel the narrative rather than those where it just seems that they stop every now and again and sing something. The only exception to that rule is Cabaret, where the purpose of the songs was as a counterpoint to the real world outside the Kitkat Club.
I'm rather averse to the new trend of taking an artists back catalogue and building a musical around them. again, there's an exception, which is the Madness musical Our House, which does work rather well.
My favourites - Evita (still think the film is massively underrated, I think it's the best tranlation of a stage musical to film ever.), Joseph, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rocky Horror Show, Little Shop Of Horrors, and the mighty Les Mis.
I desperately wanted The Producers to be good. But it wasn't.
