Anyone use one of these cards on a larger monitor? I'd read a few months back that these should be avoided if you have a 24 inch monitor but read yesterday that this is no longer the case due to driver improvements. Any owners out there that can clue me in?
i could run every game i tried to on mine, up to a resolution of 1440x900. (max my monitor offered)
basically, the worry is that it's only a 300Mb card. you won't get huge performance at the higher resolutions but in reality, its a good gaming-spec video card, it'll handle the less graphics-intensive functions perfectly adequately.
I can get one of them for £170, but if I decide I need the 640meg version then it's another £50. And if I'm paying £230 for one, why not another £70 to get a 8800 GTX?
I have a 7900 GT, overclocked. It simply isn't good enough to play new games at 1920x1200 with any eye candy on. It won't even run Medieval 2 (patch 3) at full settings.
I found this in depth review and now it's clear that even at 1920x1200 a 320Meg 8800 GTS still cuts the mustard. And when it starts to struggle I can always buy another and run in SLI mode.
It's recommended that you need more VRAM for higher res due the increased texture data. It's not like the 320MB isn't an awesome GPU but you'd see the benefits at higher res. especially with AA and AF enabled.
Been tempted to splash out myself in the past but they are a bit pointless really with hardly any DX10 games about. Just wait a year for the next gen models and you'll get a way better deal when the market calms down a bit.
I found a brand new BFG (lifetime warranty) 8800GTX OC on Ebay for £300 and snapped it up. I'm glad my car's off the road wed and thurs now. Roll on lots of shooting.
