The best thing to do is as Mark said, go through the list of tutes. Tutorials taught me bunches of good stuff, that I wouldn't have known to try on my own.
You may get frustrated trying something, and not getting the end result, but that's what the forum is here for. Mark and the rest here have been invaluable help.
There's a ton of fun girly fonts out on the web too. I have 2 girls and have managed to collect a few. I don't recall where I've collected them over the years. \:] But if you have any ideas where to start... stars, hearts, butterflies.. holler and I can help you find a free font.
Add a style to them and you'll look like a king! [righton]
Sheba mentioned styles. I'll emphatically second the notion. With one click you can take a clever font and turn it into magic. A great way to get started is with Jack Davis and Linnea Dayton's fine book, "Adobe Photoshop 7 One-Click Wow!," a modest text which comes with a CD on which there are 800 or so styles. There is enough info in the text on how to use them and from there it is not a big jump to start creating your own. It's a great way to get into the Wow factor of Photoshop for someone fairly new to the program.
