Friends Provident to sponsor England's one-day knockout
Cricinfo staff
February 8, 2007
Friends Provident, the FTSE100 life and pensions company, has been unveiled as the new sponsor of England's main domestic one-day competition, which is to be known as the Friends Provident Trophy. The deal, worth £2 million over three years, will run from 2007 until the end of the 2009 domestic season.
John Perera, the ECB's commercial director said: "We are delighted that Friends Provident has decided to sponsor the Trophy and extend their influence in cricket. Friends Provident has been a supporter of cricket through their partnership with the Test-match grounds for some time now and I am pleased that they have become a major domestic competition sponsor."
The new sponsors take over from the building society, Cheltenham & Gloucester, who put their name to the trophy for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006. "We are proud to be sponsoring such a prestigious competition," said Simon Clamp, managing director, Marketing and UK Distribution, at Friends Provident. "This is a great opportunity to build on existing involvement with international cricket and we are looking forward to building a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the ECB."
As a fifty-over competition, it is the only domestic tournament that replicates the international one-day format and its importance is well-recognised by international players."The Friends Provident Trophy gives us great experience for our one-day international matches," said Jon Lewis, whose Gloucestershire side have dominated the competition since the start of the decade. "Coming as it does at the beginning of the season is brilliant because it means we get enough 50 overs games in ahead of the home international series."
The competition will be officially launched in April and the Friends Provident Trophy gets underway on Sunday April 22, with both semi-finals due to be held on Wednesday June 20. The final will be held at Lord's on Saturday August 18

Rudolph to play for Yorkshire under Kolpak

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has approved, though "reluctantly", the signing of Jacques Rudolph by Yorkshire under the Kolpak agreement.
When Yorkshire approached Rudolph in January with a three-year contract he decided to give up playing for South Africa so that he wouldn't need to qualify as an overseas player for the county.
Under the Kolpak ruling a player from any nation sharing an associate trading relationship with the European Union is free to play as a professional within the EU. Since the ECB allows only two overseas players for each county, this ruling enables the counties to circumvent the limitation and hire professionals from outside England, especially from South Africa.
However, ECB regulations state that to qualify for Kolpak status a player should not have played international cricket over the previous 12 months. Rudolph last played for South Africa in August 2006, when South Africa toured Sri Lanka.
Though the board admitted that under European law they could not prevent Rudolph from playing for Yorkshire they condemned such type of applications. "[The board] are concerned that the registration of players under the Kolpak ruling may not be in the best interests of cricket in England and Wales generally."
Stewart Regan, the Yorkshire chief executive, said that Rudolph's signing meant that the county had a strong squad for the 2007 season. "We understand the ECB's concern about the signing of Jacques on a Kolpak agreement and have confirmed to them that the decision to sign him was not taken lightly," Regan said.
He said that during Christmas last year they found themselves going into the next season without their top three batsmen of 2006 who had, between them, scored more than half of the county's runs.
"Unfortunately, circumstances in December meant we had to look overseas for a Kolpak player," Regan said. "We have reminded the ECB that we are not the first club to sign a Kolpak player and we will certainly not be the last. Jacques has committed himself to Yorkshire for three years at the prime of his career and is bringing his wife, who is a doctor. They intend to start a new life and are very excited at the prospect. In signing a sworn affidavit, Jacques has given his word that he is serious about his commitment."
Rudolph himself said he was glad that the long wait was over and that he could finally make plans to move to Yorkshire. "I cannot wait to join my new team-mates and start my Yorkshire career. I have been keeping up to date with developments at the club and it is certainly looking good for 2007."
| from next season, there'll be only one overseas player allowed, partly due to the influx of kolpaks, but that'll ironically encourage more kolpaks surely. Quote:
Sussex granted planning permission
Cricinfo staff
April 4, 2007
Sussex have been granted planning permission to expand the County Ground at Hove, safeguarding the future of cricket at the venue which has been their home for 167 years.
The plans have been in development for six years and have gone through a number of modifications to meet earlier planning requests. The latest permission is also based on the club meeting certain criteria when they start work on the ground
Gus Mackay, the chief executive, said: "This is wonderful news for the club. We really did not relish the idea of having to move due to development restrictions. The Council's decision has ensured that the most successful cricket club of recent times can now remain in its true home and I am sure that this will be greeted with delight by all our members and supporters."

Sussex, the champion county, will face a strong MCC side in the traditional season-opener at Lord's starting on April 13.
The MCC bowling will be spearheaded by Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard, backed with Stuart Broad and Ashley Giles. The batting is almost as strong, with Alastair Cook, who leads the side, and Owais Shah the two England players.
MCC have announced that the gates will open at 10.00am on all four days, with play beginning at 11.00am. Ground admission prices, for members' guests and the general public, are £12 for adults and £6 for juveniles (under 16 years of age) and over-65s.
MCC squad Alastair Cook (Essex, capt), Will Jefferson (Nottinghamshire), Owais Shah (Middlesex), Nick Compton (Middlesex), Zoheb Sharif (Sussex), Alex Gidman (Gloucestershire), Steve Davies (Worcestershire), Ashley Giles (Warwickshire), Stuart Broad (Leicestershire), Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire), Steve Harmison (Durham), Graham Onions (Durham).

Trescothick due for return
England batsman Marcus Trescothick is expected to feature during Somerset's pre-season schedule with the next games being against Devon and Cornwall on Sunday and Wednesday respectively.
These are followed by a one-day match against Gloucestershire in Bristol on April 12 and a three-day game against Loughborough UCCE two days later.
Somerset's first LV County Championship Division Two match is against Middlesex at Taunton on April 18.
Steffan Jones, Ben Phillips, Mark Turner and Craig Kieswetter have all joined the county while Australia internationals Justin Langer and Cameron White also return alongside South Africa seamer Charl Willoughby.
Trescothick returned early from England's recent Ashes tour but has been back working hard following a double hernia operation.
Somerset complete a two-day match against Worcestershire on Thursday after Neil Edwards, John Francis and James Hildreth all hit centuries as Somerset reached 503-4 on day one.

Cricket is back at Old Trafford on 11 & 12 April!
Cricket is back at Old Trafford on 11 & 12 April!
Lancashire continue their pre-season programme when they face Durham on Wednesday and Thursday (April 11 and 12) at Old Trafford.
Each day will be a 50 overs-per-side encounter, with play starting at 10:45am on both days (please note: format and start times are subject to change as these games are designed to provide match practice for the players ahead of the season).
These matches are FREE for both Lancashire Members (Membership cards are not required) and the public to attend.
A limited amount of facilities will be open to cater for these patrons (food and drink will only be available in the Members Pavilion, which will be open to everyone). Gates open at 9am.
| 2007 Squad:
Anderson
Brown
Chapple
Chilton*
Cork
Croft
Cross
Flintoff
Hodge
Hogg
Horton
Keedy
Law
Loye
Mahmood
Marshall
Mullaney
Muralitharan
Newby
Smith
Sutcliffe
Sutton
Not sure how much Hodge and Muralitharan will be available, hopefully most of the season, but I reckon Hodge will be very close to a place in the Aus side, and I don't know about Sri Lanka's fixtures. Anyway if we don't win this season we never will tbh, Chapple, Cork, Loye, Law and Keedy are all getting on. The future looks bright though with Tom Smith coming through, hopefully he'll get a full season of county cricket before getting called up for England which is pretty much inevitable. Anderson looks like he'll be in and around the England squad all summer, as obviously Flintoff will, so we can't rely on them.
I expect our first 11 to look like this:
Chilton*
Sutcliffe
Law
Loye
Hodge
Chapple
Sutton/Cross+
Cork
Smith
Mahmood
Muralitharan
Keedy
Hopefully Cross will get a chance this season, our main problem is our openers who were gash last season, hopefully they do better or a youngster can break through, probably Karl Brown. Chilton being captain is our other problem, he's not adventurous enough, and with the rain up here he's got to take risks to force results or else we've got no chance. Also he should be nowhere near our one day side, he bats himself at 8/9 most of the time ffs. Give Law the OD captaincy please.

could go see the free Lancs game myself next week, if the weathers like this it'll be mightily tempting, but I've got loads and loads of revision to do. I'm not going away for the summer now, so am tempted to get a Lancs membership, but at £140 it's not really worth it, as I won't be able to get anyone else to come with me, and I'm going to have to get a full time job. Why they don't do a student special is beyond me.
Got tickets for the first day of the OT test v Windies though

Old Trafford set for new stadium
Cricinfo staff
February 14, 2007
The future of Old Trafford has moved a step closer to being safeguarded after Lancashire signed up to a four-way sports-leg regeneration scheme, which includes a new 25,000-seater stadium. The club has joined partners Trafford Borough Council, Ask Developments and Tesco in forming a redevelopment plan for the area.
The ground will form the lynchpin of an anticipated 750,000 sq ft development and will include conferencing and banqueting facilities, a hotel, education, training and other sports opportunities for the local community.
Various options for development are now being considered. The development partners are considering a mixed-use scheme of significant quality with business space, residential, retail, hotel, leisure and other supporting development with a potential end value of £190m. More than 2,000 new jobs could be created by the development.
Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes said: "The Old Trafford brand has a massive standing in world cricket. The club has been on the same site since 1857.
"Our membership and cricket lovers everywhere recognise the contribution that the club makes locally to the economy through visitor attraction, image, marketing and employment in the Borough.
"Together with our local partners, the North West Development Agency and Sport England, we will work towards delivering a scheme which will have at its heart a new stadium fit for the next 150 years, and which will be recognised as world-class standard, fit for the UK's greatest sporting city region and serving the huge cricketing hotbed in the north west."
| mon a new Old Trafford, us not getting a 2009 Ashes test is a farce tbh. There's big opposition to the Tesco they want to build by it though. So this could take a while.
