I presume that the catchment area for your school of choice is very small.

The usual criteria for admissions is

siblings first
then in catchment area
then distance from the school.

It will also depend on how many children the school are 'allowed' to take in each yeargroup.

As a side note, I actually 'registered' my interest for my first daughter to go to the school about 2 years before she was able to start. It was never really unlikely she would get in as it is a small village school and we only live a couple of hundred yards from it but some years it can be difficult.

This year we have ahd parents who live within a mile of the school have to appeal to get in becuase there were so many siblings starting that there were only a hadful of spaces left. They got in on a technicality (the LA measured to the wrong place ).

How do you "register" an interest?

The school itself has no say as to who goes there or not.

Ask to see the school. Most in-demand schools keep lists of interested parties, offer tours of the school, etc. For example, the infant school down the road from us has a stunning reputation. So good in fact you would have thought their teachers were angels. Anyway, we have to re-register our interest every term and we have had to do that since Izzy was one (she would start there at 3).

We have parents who register their boys at our school before they are born, but then being the independent sector, I guess this shouldn't be too surprising.

I quite literally rang up and told them I wanted to send my daughter there. As did alot of other people I know. No idea how it helps as you still have to actaully apply the same as evryone else but I think the school sent in a list of who had registered with them to the LA so who knows.

You know this for sure? I've been told it makes no odds what so ever. The school has no say in the matter.

If its a community school (run by the LA) then the school has no say at all in who gets into the reception yeargroup (new intake). The only schools who can decide who gets in are religious voluntary aided schools and private schools (who handle their own funding etc)

Since the new Admissions code of practice came in a few years ago, state schools can no longer hold lists of pupils who have expressed an interest in their school. What they should do is advise them to apply at the appropriate time for their childs place (usually the September prior to their 4th birthday) All schools who had lists at the time were told to inform the parents they would need to apply under this new system.

Gone are the days where you registered your child for a school just after they were born - like everyone else they will need to apply from the September before their 4th birthday.

It is a C of E school but can never remember of its VA as well of not (and I should know i'm a Governor ).

As we have had a lot of dealings with the LA recently (getting a new head) then i suspect that we are not VA.

A little update.

The Local borough council are proposing to change the catchment area limits for next year.

And the school i want my daughter to attend, is extending its border to my address.

So i should stand a better chance this year.

Think the online admissions form starts 24th of this month.
