Still maintains a huge element of Britishness though. The bridge from HK to Zhuhai and Macau has been given the green light though. But yeah, no doubt it has changed.

However, Macau has changed beyond all recognition since I left. More casinos, huge swathes of land reclaimed for them between Coloane and Taipa, property prices shooting through the roofs. Oh how I wish we had bought our place overlooking the South China Sea!

Got to stay in Kowloon. It IS Hong Kong. HKI feels like a relatively soulless business district like Canary Wharf or something to me. Just wander around the markets at night in Tsimmy and enjoy the feeling of being lost in the chaos.

Ten days might be pushing it a bit really imo. Some nice beaches if that is your thing and you could do a trip to the mainland and to Macau. But after the peak tram and the big buddha there's not really that much to see. Go to Happy Valley races, that's pretty awesome.

Explore stopovers. You could do something like Dubai, Singapore or Beijing as well as HK. I've been twice, once for 5 days and once for 3 days. I think you'd get more out of the trip if you mixed it up a bit.

You can get taxis everywhere, they're dirt cheap.

Lamma Island is ok as well, Sai Kung, Stanley, Ocean Prak is that's your thing. Central is the businessy district bit but that's what it is anyway. Wanchai far from that and so is Causeway Bay. Defo go Happy Valley is you get the chance as well

Guys thanks for your replies, most appreciated.

Was thinking for 7 days, 10 days max - so will more than likely be for a week.

I am going back for a week this decemeber to celebrate my birthday. Because of that i m planning to stay in a posh hotel (like Hyatt or Peninsula) for half of the trip. What **** me off about the prices of those hotel is that if i book through a hong kong travel agent it's quite a lot cheaper. the trouble is they only accept payment in person or by cheque which make it a bit difficult to book the room from UK.

We noticed that. Our habit was then to get an early morning ferry over from Macau and then book a hotel at one of the travel agents up the road from the ferry terminal.

Gav, you know when you did the  to the £100 a day bit above, is that not enough or is that too much?

I will already have my hotel paid for before I go, I'm looking at spending money per day to enjoy myself not have to wonder hm, can I afford breakfast or dinner, or both.
