The UK Dexter Thread *starts Sunday 8th July 10pm FX Channel 179* No spoilers please
So, the waiting is almost over...
Based on the excellentseries of novels by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter has been a knockout hit for the Showtime network in the States, with an early renewal for a second season a while ago. The first season is loosely based on the first novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Michael C Hall (of Six Feet Under fame), Julie Benz (Buffy, Angel and Taken), and tv veteran James Remar (recently of Jericho) are the most recognisable faces for me in the cast. We can also rest assured that like other big shows FX have picked up recently, numerous repeats throughout the week should ensure no-one need miss an episode.
A little about the show...
Quote:
DEXTER is based on the compelling novel “Darkly Dreaming Dexter” by Jeff Lindsay, a South Florida native. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter’s homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators who are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel, and to keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.
and the main characters...
Quote:
Dexter Morgan
He'll charm fellow officers with a doughnut, wile away a Sunday with his girlfriend Rita, or chop up a victim and package their body parts in plastic bags. Hiding beneath the mundane exterior and contrived façade of Dexter, a charming blood spatter expert for the Miami Police Department, is an obsession with meting his own twisted brand of justice: stalking and murdering the guilty.
Rita Bennett
Rita's everything Dexter's looking for in a girlfriend: broken and sexually disinterested. Surviving a violent ex-husband and harboring the mental scars to prove it, Rita is struggling to raise two kids on her own. Together, Dexter and Rita attempt to create a sense of normalcy in their often twisted lives.
Debra Morgan
As Dexter puts it about his cop sister, “if I could have feelings at all, I'd have them for Deb.” Her career ambitions -- getting out of vice and into homicide -- fall short due to insecurity and the belief within the department that she does her best police work in a 'sex suit'. Deb looks up to Dexter but senses there is more to him than meets the eye.
Doakes
An ill-tempered vet, Doakes is the one cop on the force, supposed experts in judging character, who suspects something isn't quite right with Dexter.
Maria Laguerta
Whether a wink, a sly look or hand on his shoulder, Lt. La Guerta, the division's boss and resident dictator, makes no attempt to hide her sexual interest in Dexter.
Angel Batista
A fellow homicide detective, Batista works closely with Dexter on forensics cases and while he may not share Dexter's blood lust, he definitely appreciates the art of killing.
Harry Morgan
Harry Morgan, Dexter's adopted father and a former homicide detective, was first to spot Dexter's passion for human vivisection and helped his son channel his homicidal impulses in a more constructive pursuit: delivering vigilante justice.
Some more information can be found here, along with a few videos, although be warned they are supposedly loaded with scenes from the series, so potential spoilerage is high.
Really looking forward to this, absolutely loved the books, and eagerly awaiting the third, while news that the second series of this will not be based on the second novel, which means even more new Dexter stories.
So, bring on the Sunday nights.

Both books are great, will be a same if the S2 won't be based on the 2nd novel, but then again latter part of S1 doesn't match up with the 1st novel.
As long as they can stay true to the characters from the novels then it's a good thing surely, gives us as fans more material. Having read the books, I know at least some of the plot for the first season. Won't have that with the second.

Bit of a TV void at the moment. Come to the End of the West Wing on DVD, Sopranos has finished. Sleeper Cell ended on FX this week, as did Dr Who. No lost or brotherhood at the moment. Leaves me with this, Heroes and Rome really.
Though there's something new on C4 next week that looks interesting...can't remember the name off hand.

That would be Meadowlands, another brilliant show. It started on Showtime here in the states, with the fourth episode airing on Sunday. The premiere is set to air on the 10th at 10PM in the UK according to wikipedia.
