"A 30-year-old man arrested in connection with the death of four-year-old Ryan Hawkins has been released without charge, West Yorkshire police said.
A 47-year-old man remains in police custody and continues to be questioned by police.
Ryan was taken to hospital with serious injuries after an incident in Royd Street, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, on Sunday afternoon but died a short time later.
Ryan's 14-year-old sister, Donna, was also taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with multiple stab wounds and is said to be in a serious but stable condition after surgery.
Neighbours have described how they rushed to Donna's aid as she shouted for help.
Waqar Zaman, 34, owner of nearby Hill Top Stores, was one of the first people on the scene and described how he tried to help the teenager by removing his T-shirt and trying to stem the flow of blood from her wounds.
He said: "She had a stab wound on her face which went straight through her mouth, she had stab wounds in her stomach just under her rib cage, all over the place."
Mr Zaman said he believed Donna had gone to pick her brother up from Mr Hawkins' house when the attack happened.
When police arrived, they discovered Ryan in the house with serious injuries but Mr Hawkins was not there, having left the house to go for a drink in the nearby Silent Woman pub, Mr Zaman said."
How could you do that to anyone, let alone your own kids ? people really make you wonder sometimes what the point is
