Quite honestly, your personal statement isn't as important as most think it is, nor as important as most teachers etc try to insist it is. The exception is if you're going to be off doing medicine, where it can be a deciding factor.
Basically, it's letting whoever receives it get to know a bit about you - bascally what has been said already. You explain why you want to do what you've applied for - what sparked an interest and so on. The most important part is to not sound like a goody-two-shoes bookworm - let them know that you enjoy your sports, music etc, but also let them understand that you know and are able to get the balance between work and play right.
Much more important to Uni's is the reference they are given from your head of year/college/6th form or whatever they're called.

I have to get my Personal Statement 1st draft handed into my school this week and i was just wondering what you guys thought of this as my plan.
1st Paragraph - Trying to get my enthusiasm for the subject(Politics) across.
2nd Paragraph - Linking how my other two subjects(Economics & History) to politics and how they have helped me develop useful skills for the subject.
3rd Paragraph - Extra curricular activities some relevent some not so relevent and mentioning the skills i have developed from my job(Waitrose) into school life.
4th Paragraph - Rounding the statement off.
OTF, have i missed anything crucial out? Some people at my school are putting cheesy quotes into thier statements while others have hat loads of extra curricular experience that is actually relevent to their subject.
Thanks.
| Say something like "I have picked up invaluable skills int he tertiary sector such as..." opposed to "I have picked up lots of skills at Watirose such as how to stack shelves and be shouted at by members of the public", although I'm sure the kind of customers who shop at Waitrose wouldn't dare shout at you...they'd just take the time to fill out a complaint slip and pop it in the suggestions box. </BLOCKQUOTE>
because using the phrase 'tertiary sector' doesnt make you look like a twat
i mean for ffs your average uni candidates are probably aged 18-19 been in education all their lives so far - what possible experience in 'the tertiary sector' could you have in reality actually gained.
this thread is hilarious

Never once seen you in a politics, history or economics thread. Have you thought of devoting the fourth paragraph to lying?

If you can write relatively eloquently, you're roughly in the range of the top 10% of the utter ***** I had to <STRIKE>rewrite extensively</STRIKE> proof read last November.

| actually, if you're going to an interview they're quite valuable for getting an idea of the person you're about to grill mercilessly .
..oh, and for the record, the basic structure of what was already in place sounds fine.

Oh, and an absolute massive no-no is to be a pretentious arse. Use the language you normally use, you'll stand out a mile away when you get interviewed (or are contradicted in the reference your teacher sends)
