The Twenty-20 World Cup - Sponsored by you know who winning... Post #2
Ponting, Watson and Clark left behind September 4, 2007
AUSTRALIA'S bid for the inaugural Twenty20 world championship struck turbulence yesterday with skipper Ricky Ponting among three players left grounded as the team flew out to South Africa.
Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said "a private family issue" which arose over the weekend had forced Ponting to miss the flight from Sydney. A decision on whether the captain would join his teammates - or be replaced - would be made later in the week.
All-rounder Shane Watson (hamstring injury) and paceman Stuart Clark (ill son) also remained behind, although both were expected to fly to South Africa midweek.
Australia have two warm-up games this weekend, but do not open their championship campaign until September 12 against Zimbabwe in Cape Town.
Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist, who will lead the touring party in Ponting's absence, was confident his skipper, Watson and Clark would all be available for the start of the competition.
"I've spoken to Punter, he's said that he's most likely at the moment going to join us in a few days, but we'll just wait and see how things pan out in the next couple of days," said Gilchrist, who did not want to speculate on the reason for Ponting's absence.
"We're heading over a little light in numbers, but I think everything will be fine.
"In a few days when things settle, we'll most likely get the three players that aren't travelling with us today back, so I'm sure everything should settle down midweek."
Watson will stay in Brisbane under the watch of team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris after complaining of soreness in his left hamstring following Sunday's team training session.
Preliminary scans have cleared the injury-prone all-rounder of any major damage, but Watson was cautious as a consequence of having rushed comebacks before.
Gilchrist said: "I guess everyone, him included, are veering on the side of caution to ensure there's not a replication of last year when he did strain it and fought hard to get back into that team and then ended up missing the majority of the summer."

Obviously the Aussies will win, the Bangles should do well, and I'm disgusted to see that the cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunts don't have Kallis in the squad. He'd be perfect for Twenty-20 imo.
Schofield and Snape to go for at least 10 an over if they play.

You'll have to make do with watching it on ropey internet streams or in the Buxton taverns - my humble abode lacks television.
