Now would be a good time to buy some shares in Northern Rock, whilst they are so low.

No it wouldn't, as they're going to the wall.

They can't find a buyer, and are going to have to hike Mortgage Rates up to offset the cost of taking the Emergency Loan from the Bank of England.

They've been running a high risk strategy for year (7 times joint income lending, ffs!) and this has been coming for some time now.

If I were the original poster, I'd put $7000 in an ISA, with the maximum £3k going into a cash portion and the remainder in Stocks & Shares ISA. That way you're limiting the risk of the fluctuations in the Markets.

Definitely wouldn't invest in a Property portfolio at the moment as well; there's some major disruptions in that market in the offing.

maxi ISA  basically all my student loan in there from the past two years, looking at nearly 25% profit on it at the minute, and that's after the **** state the markets have been in lately too.

If you do go down that route, choose the funds you invest in very carefully - look for 2-3 different funds that have been consistently good over a few years, as well as during smaller timescales (i.e. one month, three months).

For that amount of money after you've done the ISA I would take a no risk punt and put the rest in Premium Bonds - full capital returnable with one months notice iirc and the chance to win a potentially large prize, plenty of smaller ones as well.
Cos lets face it even 5% net on £3000 is £150 and you could do that in one good night out

Northern Rock shares are so cheap at the moment though, plus they're just doing a 7% dividend payout on them . They can't really get much lower.

get an isa. that's what i've got.

got a letter through from firstdiret as well. they're going to stop paying interest on current accounts. which is a rubbish amount anyway.
and pay a nice heafty interest on a new savings account.
so i'm goin to go for that on top of my isa and current savings account
