On a totally unrelated note, whilst Bert seems to be around, I was wondering the other day: in the Middle East, what was the religion there in the time before the Prophet Mohammed? You seem to be as clued up about these things as you are opinionated, so any ideas?

Yes, bows were around, but the Anglo-Saxons didn't use them in great numbers. The Normans did use them.
Opinion is divided on how Harold was killed. Almost certainly cut down by Norman knights but whether he'd received an arrow in the eye beforehand is very much open to debate. Most accounts from the time didn't mention the arrow story.
