Default Stand Out TV Episodes

Ever watched a TV episode that’s left you in awe? Ever had a favourite series where one episode seems to leap out at being just so good you rave about it to anyone who’ll listen?

What are your favourite stand out episodes of TV shows and why?

Btw, if it’s not blatantly obvious by now this thread will contain spoilers, so if you don’t want to read them either close it now or scroll past the ones you don’t want to know about.

24 Season 1, episode 24

The final episode of the first season and I don’t think it will ever be topped. Jack gets told by Nina that the coastguard have found Kim’s dead body. The following scenes are simply awesome, as Jack first breaks down, filled with grief at the death of his daughter. He then wipes away the tears, loads up his weapons and goes going on a suicidal rampage. The scene where he stands off against Victor Drazen is another awesome moment.

After rescuing his daughter and killing the bad guys everything is fine, right?

Quantum Leap – The Leap Home Part 2

After another great episode (The Leap Home), Sam unsuccessfully tries to save his brother from dying in the Vietnam war, being told at the end of the episode that is brother still dies, only to leap immediately into his brothers platoon in the war.

The rest of the episode revolves around Sam torn between doing his mission and saving his brother’s life, which he’s not supposed to do.

Blackadder goes Forth – Goodbyeee

Another final episode, but this one isn’t remembered for the laughs. The final scene is one of the few moving moments form a TV show and one I’ll always remember. There’s something touching about knowing that so many men would have made these pushes in the war, knowing that they’d most likely die, but still going ahead. Don’t think I would have had the guts to do that.

Fawlty Towers – The Germans

Perfect example of a timeless classic. No matter how many times I see this, I always crease up laughing when Basil does his impression. Would probably not be given the air time now. IT’S PC GONE MAD.

Lost Season 1 – Episode 24, Exodus, part 2

Yet another final episode. I wouldn’t exactly say this is great throughout the whole episode, but there’s enough to leave you desperate for the next season to begin. Highlight of the episode is where the others attack the boat and take Walt with them. Such an amazing scene where the others reveal that they want the boy and there’s a mini fight between the two boats. Just a shame the series started to go silly soon afterwards.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Passion

Had to have a Buffy episode in. So many to choose from but I’m going to pick Passion. If anyone thinks that Buffy is a kids TV show this is the episode to watch. It has so much in it, the death of a major character, a former good guy (seemingly) passing the ‘no way back’ barrier and a glimpse at the turmoil our wonky nosed heroine is faced with throughout the entire series.

There is a Heroes one, but I'm loathe to write about it as some won't have seen it yet.

Other than that I'm not sure. Couple of early Prison Break ones, but generally I tend to look back on series as a whole rather than recall any standout individual parts.

Stargate SG-1 - Episode 6, Season 4.
Perfect blend of humour and pathos that combines into a brilliant episode.
