The Guardian did a little experiment regarding this about a year ago. They created three people - one with low income, one with mid income and one with high income and filled in one or two online forms without ticking the "Please do not pass my details on" box. Within a month, the low income had become inundated by calls/direct mailing, within six months the mid income one had a few and within the whole year the high income guy had received nothing.
To be expected, of course, but I was surprised at the little amount of time it took to sell the information on and get in touch.

i told them im not on there network anymore and hung up.

God, I used to be one of those horrible cold callers for about 2 months when I was staying in London. Absolutely hated it, I set the record for least number of sales ever - people were getting fired for not hitting 4 a day, I got 1 in 2 weeks having handed my notice in (probably the only person to have ever done that in one of those jobs).
But I did enjoy myself from time to time, chucking on my broadest Aussie accent and claiming to be Alf Stewart from One.Tel, sometimes I'd be Juan Tell from One.Tel etc etc. My favourite moment is when a bloke asked me if I was from India and I called him a 'flamin' galah'. Alf :cool:
