The plot behind Saving Private Ryan is crap. They try to get away with it by having the troops discuss it, but it still doesn't disguise the fact it's pap.

Obviously it's a point to be aimed at the books not the films, but if Gandalf was SUCH good mates with those flying eagley things, and they were basically the business even when it came to fighting wraiths on wings, why not jump on their backs, fly over Mount Doom, drop the ring in the lava and all be back in time for a pint down the Green Dragon?

Minority Report doesn't work either. Basically in that the pre-cogs 'predict' things that would happen, and then the authorities jump in and stop them. Implying therefore that the visions the pre-cogs see are what would occur without their intervention. But then Tom Cruise's character only goes on the run and ends up in a situation to kill because of the pre-cogs vision. Cause and effect paradox imho.
