I wonder whether you might change your mind as and when you have your own.

I wouldnt leave my kids on their own in a hotel room at their current ages. </BLOCKQUOTE>

I suppose it comes from from my parents doing it when we were younger. We'd be on the 6th floor of a hotel and they'd be in the hotel restaurant, tbf I see no problem with that if you check up on them </BLOCKQUOTE>

See that represents way too much risk imo.

Like I said in the police thread though Im very over protective of my kids, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Fair enough, and like you said, until I have one of my own I don't quite know how I'd act.

I do see kids who have been wrapped up in cotton wool for so long, their parents let them live in this make believe bubble and I wouldn't want that for my kids

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect your kids to be in the company of a responsible adult until they're old enough to tell the difference between right and wrong. After that you can only hope they make the right choice.

To be fair if a child is so young to not even have the decision making prowess to form a proper sentence I dont see how keeping an eye on them is going to impinge on their ability to be independent.

I still can't believe you have to pass a meticulous and pedantic test to drive a car yet any old waste of space is allowed to have a kid.

In the case of the McCanns, there is no way they should ever be allowed to have another child.

Country aleady full, why let kids be born into poverty and into irresponsible families? Means testing, emotionally and financially, is the way to go now.

leaving a child on their own doesnt teach them independence at all, and I'd wager most that do it wait until the kids are asleep before going out.

and tbqh Ive never really understood the need to do this at all in the first place, if they are babies, you wouldnt leave them at all, and if they are 3 upwards they are old enough to be out with you, sleep in their buggies if required, and adjust their routines to stay up later. Far better way of teaching them independence too.

I thought the McCanns were dining nearby, but not as part of the same complex. Is that wrong?

So much depends upon the age of the children. I know when I was a kid I had licence to roam unpoliced from when I was about 7, albeit that we never went more than about 5 minutes bike ride from the house. Tempus fugit.

People do get paranoid, and society gets more condemnatory and less willing to accept that sometimes things just happen.

With our daughter, from about 8 or 9 she could play out in the street, providing she was given limits on where she could go and when she had to be back. Now, at 15, she is more or less free range.
