You're right. Livingstone never ran a big city like London before becoming mayor, did he? Obviously had no record for people to judge him on, it was all down to his sparkling charisma.

What rubbish. People know Ken because of his left wing politics, his stint as an MP, his time as leader of the GLC and his two terms as Mayor. People know Boris because of his "hilarious" appearances on HIGNFY and his bumbling public persona, no-one's going to vote for him because they think he's a good politician.

Even if people do vote for Boris because of his persona (and not everyone will, the population of London is not just students you know) he does have substance behind his media image.

Oh, and I imagine most peoples memories won't go back to the Red Ken of the 80s, all they'll have to go on is his stint as mayor.

That part obviously had no bearing when he first ran. Outside of the left-wing media he was thought of the same way that George Galloway is today, and about as well respected- until he won in 1997 against a battered Tory party and the weak Frank Dobson.

I agree with you entirely there. Rightly or wrongly, his popularity comes because he isn't a good politician.

I'm not denying that he's cut out for a job like mayor, people won't be voting for him because of that though, they'll be voting for him because they're stupid ***** who'd be just as likley to vote for Wolf from Gladiators or David Hasselhoff because OMG it's so IRONIC.

I think people will have some idea of his policies once the campaigning kicks off big time, and will have plenty opportunity to decide if any policies are abhorrent enough to vote for Ken instead.

I'd give Boris the vote on bringing back Routemasters alone, they **** from a great height on those embarrassing buses they peddle around now. Frankly, I'd vote for whomever was running against Livingstone, being the two-faced corrupt arse-licker that he is. He's been an absolute disaster for London, as anyone not entranced by the Labour hype-machine is well aware, and if Johnson does get it, it'll be great to have someone who's not only intelligent, but also has real personality, in the post to give London some of its character back. Fingers crossed the congestion charge will be the first thing to go.
