On that calculator a 12k a year job takes you home something like £836 a month, £1150-£311 is £839 hardly worth it? I understand the oppurtunity and that, but it sounds like a pretty standard role?
| I know where you are coming from, and it was the first thought that came to mind when I checked the job out in the first place - 3 hours travel every day for a rather minimal pay rise.
My Mum suggested a flat share/digs in London as a possible way around that, and it's something I'd want to look into. I've always loved the idea of living in London, although it won't be cheap, and I'm under no illusions as to how difficult it may be to start a new job and move out at the same time.
Some really interesting thoughts/opinions coming out here though - cheers lads

Honestly it's not as bad as you think. As long as you can live sensibly and stick to a reasonable budget you won't go far wrong.
On the travel side of things, I live in Zone 3 and can get to Waterloo station in 20 minutes in the mornings. My annual season ticket costs me about £90 per month.

I wouldnt do that commute for 17k a year, unless there was a real strong chance that money would be going up very soon.
Rather spend the day stacking paint pots.

my morning commute is 40 minutes and i find that excessive, i dunno how you zone 4+ people do it.
i wouldn't take the job, but then i'd quit the diy store anyway because they're the most depressing places in the world and everyone who works there has a huge gut.
plus london is **** unless you're rich.

| It's not that bad, but it depends on what you want out of it. IMO DS will get on fine because of the apparent quality of the company he'll be working for. You don't need money to be happy. But if DS does then more IT qualifications will mean big money in years to come.

not sure what kind of rent you pay now, but add to that the travel expenses per month and you I reckon should find something decent in the area of London
or am I wrong?
