It's because they're symmetrical. Most old stadiums, or those gradually redeveloped remain assymmetrical which apparently adds character.

My point exactly. All the new stadiums have vastly better facilities but I just found something charming about assymmetrical designs. For new stadia/redeveloped stadia, St James Park and the Stadium of Light are beacons for design in my opinion. Hell, I'm even warming to Liverpool's after the initial shock of moving from Anfield.
The Emirates, Darlington Arena, Riverside et al have no character whatsoever - they look like friggin' shopping centres.
